Day 1 - Arrival
In the afternoon, arrival in Viterbo and accommodation in the hotel. Welcome drink and dinner.
Day 2 – Mysteries of the Etruscans
In the morning departure to Tarquinia, the first significant and important Etruscan settlement. Visit to the Etruscan Museum where you can discover the mystery and fascination of the first civilisation of the region. Visit to one of the archaelogical sites. After lunch you can admire a jewel of the medieval art: the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Tuscania. Return to Viterbo and dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 - Viterbo
In the morning walking tour of the centre of Viterbo. After the visit of the Cathedral and the Papal Palace departure to Caprarola to visit the Farnese Palace, testimonial of the power and influence of one of the most powerful families in Italy in the XVI century. After lunch visit to the Duomo and of the rests of the Anfitheatre of Sutri. Gentle walk along the lake of Vico and return to Viterbo. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4 - Orvieto and the lake of Bolsena
After breakfast departure to Orvieto. Guided walk along the streets of this lovely medieval town where you may admire the historical centre, the Duomo and the San Patrizio Well.. In the afternoon, panoramic drive along the Lake of Bolsena and visit of the town of Bolsena. In the evening return to Viterbo.
Day 5 – On the way to Rome
Breakfast and departure to Rome. Stop at the Lake of Bracciano to visit the splendid Castle that belongs to the Orsini-Odescalchi family since the XV century and defined by six towers and two walls, one of the best preserved medieval castles in Italy. From the top you get a superb view of the village and of the lake. Do not miss a visit to the splendid central garden of the castle. Continue the journey to Rome. Hotel accommodation, dinner and overnight.
Day 6 - Tivoli
In the morning, departure to Tivoli, ancient holiday resort during the roman and renaissance periods. Visit of Villa Adriana that was built under the personal supervision of the emperor Hadrian , in memory of all the places he had visited during his long journeys. The villa, that has been included byUnesco in the lista of the Patrimony of Humanity, is probably the most rich complex of ancient times. After lunch visit to Villa d’Este, one of the most beautiful renaissance villa built for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este and famous all over the world for its splendid garden and its fountains. Return to Rome. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 - Castelli Romani area
Departure in the morning for the Castelli Romani area that offers an enchanting view of the south east of Rome. Surrounded by the Albani Hills and the roman countryside , in this area in past times, popes and roman aristocrats used to live. Visit to Castel Gandolfo, papal summer residence. Lunch in the town of Frascati, whose white wine was already famous already in ancient times. In the afternoon return to Rome for dinner and overnight.
Day 8 - Subiaco
After breakfast departure to Subiaco. Visit to the Monastry of S.Benedict and S. Scolastica, that were founded in the VI century by S.Benedict. In the library of S. Scolastica are kept very precious manuscripts , such as the fisrt book printed in Italy. Two apprentices from Johann Gutenbergsfounded here the first printer in Italy. After lunch, free time to visit the centre of Subiaco. Return to Rome. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
